Swimmer’s comment

For me, it was a great experience, not only successfully swimming the Tsugaru Strait, but also having the opportunity to experience Japan, its culture, its cuisine, and, above all, its polite and friendly people. Despite the language barrier, they were always willing to help.

As for the swim itself, the Tsugaru Strait was definitely one of the most challenging of the seven seas.

Due to the dramatic temperature change between the start and finish, which added to the obvious fatigue after the first 10 hours of swimming in my case, in addition to a strong current that hit me right at the moment of the lowest temperature.

Observer’s comment

During the preliminary meeting on the 17th of June, Mr. Collazos seemed very relaxed and exuded an energy off genuine eagerness to enjoy the challenge ahead. Rather than tension, I sensed confidence and composure.

As the starting horn sounded off and the swim commenced, both Mr. Collazos and the crew on board were filled with excitement and anticipation as we set out to sea.

The sea conditions were fortunately calm, but as the swim progressed a dense fog developed, making visibly quite a challenge. During the middle stage of the swim, the tidal currents grew stronger and there were periods when it was difficult to make forward progress.

Despite all these challenges, Mr. Collazos remained calm throughout, maintaining a steady rhythm in his strokes without any sign of disruption. In the latter stages of the swim, signs of fatigue began to appear, yet he continued swimming with determination, never giving up until he reached his goal.

When he finally finished the swim, he returned to the escort boat. He was so exhausted that he could hardly speak, shivering from the effects of the cold seawater.

As an observer sharing the same long hours at sea, there were moments of anxiety brought on by the fog and the currents. However, when the tide turned and Mr. Collazos began to make clear progress towards the shore, a deep sense of relief and emotion welled up inside me.

To witness such a remarkable challenge — crossing the vast Tsugaru Strait solely by human power — was truly an honour.

Congratulations, Mr. Collazos, on becoming the first man from South America to achieve the Oceans Seven. What an extraordinary accomplishment!
